In my exploration of Creation vs. Evolution, I discovered that two individuals observing the same rock can arrive at different conclusions. Atheists often argue that Creationists lack evidence, while Creationists maintain that we all have access to the same evidence. The issue is not a lack of proof, but rather differences in “worldview” and presuppositions (cf. Matthew 22:23-28). An individual who denies the truth of Genesis 1:1 will naturally interpret life and rocks differently than a Creationist who accepts it. As Dale Carnegie aptly stated in one of his books, “Two men looked out from prison bars, one saw the mud, the other saw stars.” The same applies to Christ. When the question was posed, “Who do men say that I… am?” the responses varied: ‘John the Baptist,’ ‘Elijah,’ ‘Jeremiah.’
Here’s a small sample:
Good Master/Teacher (Mark 10:17).
Son of Joseph & Mary (John 6:42,7:25-27)
A good man / a deceiver (John 7:11-13)
Demon possessed (John 7:20,8:48)
Has a demon, mad or insane (John 10:20)
Not from/of God (John 9:16,29)
A prophet (John 9:17)
A sinner (John 9:24)
A man makes himself to be God (John 10:33)
Divided over mixed opinions (John 7:40-43,9:16,10:20-21)
We must recognize that not everyone who comes to Christ does so for the right reasons (cf. Matthew 7:21-23). Many came seeking healing after witnessing His miracles. Some came because they wanted to be physically fed. Others simply followed Him, perceiving Him as a good teacher.
“Many were seeing what Simon Peter saw, but were not seeing ‘the Christ, the Son of the living God’ (Matthew 16:16). This sight is something [different].” —John Piper
“There is a knowledge of the glory of God in the gospel which is [different] from believing the facts, or even believing that the facts will save us. There is what Paul describes in 2 Corinthians 4:4: ‘seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ.’ That is not a physical light. It is a beauty perceived by the eyes of the heart (Ephesians 1:18).” —John Piper
The Christ perceived by the flesh cannot save (cf. 2 Corinthians 5:16). Only when an individual is taught by God the Father (cf. John 6:45) and has their eyes opened by the Spirit can they truly see Christ as He is. When they finally have eyes to see, Christ becomes irresistible. Many have eyes that see not because, “no one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son…” (Luke 10:22). Only when God opens our eyes will we truly see. And this He does not do for everyone.
Now Moses called all Israel and said to them: “You have seen all that the LORD did before your eyes in the land of Egypt, to Pharaoh and to all his servants and to all his land—the great trials which your eyes have seen, the signs, and those great wonders. Yet the LORD has not given you a heart to perceive and eyes to see and ears to hear, to this very day. —Deuteronomy 29:2-4
