“A good theologian is one who is instructed by God”
R.C. Sproul was spot on when he said,
“No Christian can avoid theology. Every Christian is a theologian. Perhaps not a theologian in the technical or professional sense, but a theologian nevertheless. The issue for Christians is not whether we are going to be theologians but whether we are going to be good theologians. A good theologian is one who is instructed by God.”
A good theologian is one who is instructed by God. Paul, highly educated and well-taught by men, was blind to the way of Christ. His wisdom and learning blinded him, leading him to zealously persecute Christ and His Church. When someone is this zealous and furious, only the Spirit of Grace can turn them around. And when it happens, our worldview will be shattered - making way for a paradigm-shift (Galatians 1:16). It's an uncomfortable experience to have our beliefs proven wrong. In Paul's case, God showed him how wrong he was. He went to be alone with the Lord for three years, being taught by Him and relearning or unlearning (Galatians 1:17). This is because “at one time we thought of Christ merely from a human point of view. How differently we know him now!” (2 Corinthians 5:16 NLT). Paul was taught and instructed by God. He was, indeed, a good theologian!
